Army Ten-Miler officials announced recently that the runner cap for the 2007 race will be raised to 26,000 runners.
In 2006 the race cap was raised to 24,000 runners –from 20,000 – and the race sold out in a record 81 days after registration opened.
The Army’s annual 10-mile running event is held at the Pentagon in Oct. – the day before the opening session of the Association of the United States Army’s Annual Meeting and Exposition.
“This is a great Army tradition that attracts both military and civilian runners from around the world,” Jim Vandak, the race director, said.
“We have increased the runner cap again in 2007 so more runners will be able to participate. Last year, race registration closed in 81 days after it opened – and many runners were not able to participate. With the 2,000-runner increase, many who did not run in 2006 will now have the opportunity to compete.”
The Army’s race is open to all branches of the military as well as civilians and features a robust team competition with over 600 teams competing for top honors.
Notwithstanding the increased cap, race officials are encouraging runners to register early.
“We are predicting that the race will reach its new and expanded capacity very quickly, so we are urging runners to sign up early – online – to ensure a slot in the race,” Vandak said.
This Army tradition annually attracts runners from around the world to a race course that starts and finishes at the Pentagon and passes national landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Washington Monument, the Capitol and the Smithsonian Institution.
Race weekend activities include a two-day race EXPO, clinics and a press conference.
Race day will feature youth runs, a post race party featuring bands, entertainment and a live broadcast, the HOOAH Tent Zone, and a youth activity zone complete with displays, inflatable characters, the GEICO Gecko, McGruff the Crime Dog and much more.
The race’s lead sponsors, again this year, are the Association of the United States Army and KBR, an AUSA sustaining member.
The Ten-Miler is staged and produced by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington.
